Let's say you e-filed your return 2 minutes before the midnight filing deadline, but your return didn't get accepted until 2 days later. Is your return on-time or late?
The answer is on-time (yay!) because you e-filed before the deadline.
Your Electronic Postmark is a way to prove that you e-filed before the deadline. Basically, the postmark is a time stamp that shows when your return was transmitted.
To get your Electronic Postmark
Your return's electronic filing status history records all e-filing activity related to the return, including the Electronic Postmark. You can print it out if needed.
- Click here, enter the Social Security number of the first taxpayer on the return and the ZIP code to retrieve your filing status history.
