How do I fix e-file reject IND-031-04 or IND-032-04?

SOLVEDby TurboTax14830Updated 1 week ago

If the 2022 adjusted gross income (AGI) you entered for yourself (or for your spouse if you filed jointly) doesn't match what the IRS has in their database, you'll get these rejections:

  • IND-031-04: The primary taxpayer's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year does not match IRS records.
  • IND-032-04: The spouse's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year doesn't match IRS records.

First, find your 2022 AGI. It's on your original 2022 Form 1040, line 11. Then, select your version of TurboTax below and follow the instructions to fix and resubmit your return. Be sure to use the exact AGI listed on your form. Don't split or round anything.

AGI reject tips

  • If you don't have a copy of last year's return, you can get your AGI from an IRS tax transcript. Online transcripts are available instantly and mailed ones take 5–10 days. On your transcript, look for the line Adjusted Gross Income.
  • Don't calculate your AGI from your W-2s or 1099s.
  • If you amended last year, don’t use the AGI from that amended return. Always get it from the first return you filed, even if that AGI was technically incorrect (for example, if you forgot a W-2).
  • If you printed and mailed your return and it was not processed by December 10, 2023, then enter “0” for your 2022 AGI.
  • If you filed a return last year, but somebody claimed you as a dependent, enter the AGI showing on your return for last year (not theirs).
  • If you filed jointly last year but separately this year, enter the AGI from last year’s return. The same goes for recently-widowed or divorced taxpayers who filed jointly last year.
  • If you're filing jointly this year but selected married filing separately last year, enter each spouse's individual AGIs from last year. This also applies to newlywed couples.
  • If you're a first-time filer over the age of 16, enter "0" as your AGI.
  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account and select Fix my return.
  2. On the Let's fix your returns and then refile screen, select Fix it now or Revisit.
  3. On the following screen, enter your 2022 AGI from your Form 1040, line 11. Be sure to enter the number exactly how it appears. Then select Continue e-filing.
    • If you're fixing IND-032-04 for your spouse, be sure to use their Form 1040 and enter the exact number from line 11. Don't split, round, or try to calculate anything.
  4. On the next screen, confirm that the number is correct and select This is my 2022 AGI.
  5. On the Keep going to refile your return screen, select Continue to refile and follow the screens to resubmit your return.

If you don't have your 2022 AGI, you can select File by mail instead, to print your return as-is and mail it to the IRS.

  1. Sign into your TurboTax account and select Fix my return.
  2. On the screen Let's fix your returns and then refile screen, select Fix it now or Revisit.
  5. Follow the instructions to finish and refile your return.

If you don't have your 2022 AGI, you can select File by mail instead, to print your return as-is and mail it to the IRS.

You'll need to leave the TurboTax Mobile App and sign in to TurboTax through a browser:

  1. Inside the app, select the menu icon, then select Sign Out.
  2. Open your browser (either on your device or a computer) and sign in at MyTurboTax.com.
  3. Use the TurboTax Online instructions (listed previously) to fix your AGI.

If you've tried all of the solutions listed on this page and you're still getting rejected, print and mail your return instead. You won't have to deal with AGI issues this way. Select File by mail to print your return, and mail it to the IRS.
