What are considered "qualified education expenses"?

The exact definition of a qualified education expense depends on the educational credit, with the Lifetime Learning Credit being a bit more restrictive.

Both the American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit consider tuition and student-activity fees as qualified education expenses if they were paid to an eligible education institution as a condition of enrollment.

In addition, you can claim books, supplies, and equipment required for class under the American Opportunity Credit, but to claim them as qualified expenses under the Lifetime Learning Credit, you will need to have purchased them directly from the school.
