Error 5641 when installing, updating, or downloading TurboTax State

While attempting to install and update TurboTax, or when trying to download a state program, you may get an Error 5641 message.

This error message may be the result of either of the following:

  • Folder and/or file permission issues caused by your antivirus program or backup software that is still running
  • Corrupted system file(s)

Select your Windows version below and follow the on-screen instructions.

Windows 7, 8 or Vista

  1. Uninstall TurboTax.
  2. Remove these folders:
    • 32-bit system
      • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\Database Providers
      • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\Update Service v4
    • 64-bit system
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intuit\Database Providers
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intuit\Update Service v4
  3. Disable/pause your anti-virus real-time protection and automatic backup software.
  4. Reinstall TurboTax
  5. Re-enable your antivirus/backup software.

Windows XP

  1. Download XP Service Pack 3 from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24 onto your desktop.
  2. Go to the Control Panel and select Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the Add or Remove Programs window, locate Windows XP Service Pack 3 and uninstall (remove) it. (If this option is unavailable, then disregard this step.)
  4. Re-install XP Service Pack 3 from the download you placed on your desktop in step 1.
  5. Run TurboTax.
  6. Re-enable your antivirus/backup software.

  1. Go to Start and then the Control Panel (Or right-click the Start button and select Control Panel in Windows 8).
  2. Select View By, then choose Category in Win 7/8 or Classic View in Vista.


     
  3. Double-click Administrative Tools.


     
  4. Double-click Services.


     
  5. Right-click Intuit Update Service v4 and Select Stop.
  6. Right-click Intuit Update Service (if present) and select Stop.


     
  7. Close the Services, Administrative Tools, and Control windows.

Now perform the following sequence of steps as indicated in the series of figures below to resolve the issue:

Note: On a 32-bit system there is no "(x86)" after program files in the path highlighted at the top of the screen.

At this point, you will need to bring up a command console and execute a command.

The steps to do this are as follows:

Note: For Windows 8, type in "cmd.exe" from the Metro UI and when it appears in the list below, right-click it and select "Run as Administrator"

Note: On a 32-bit system there are no "(x86)" after Program Files.
