What if I missed the October 16 filing deadline?

If your 2016 return was rejected, you have until Saturday, October 21 (11:59 PM local time) to electronically resubmit your 2016 return in TurboTax Online.

Alternatively, you can file a conventional paper return. Simply reopen your return, click File, and follow the onscreen instructions to file by mail. Do this by October 25, after which TurboTax Online closes for the 2016 tax season.

  • Getting a refund?
    • You can paper-file your 2016 return in the TurboTax software any time up until April 15 of 2020 (that's right – 2020) before the statute of limitations on your 2016 tax refund expires. And if you filed an extension, you have until October 15 of 2020.
  • Still owe? File your return (if you haven't already) and try to pay off as much of your tax bill you can, as soon as you can, to minimize your penalties.

If you're no longer able to access your unfinished 2016 return in TurboTax Online, find out how to finish after the shutdown.
