"There is an update available" message when attempting to e-file

If your TurboTax software isn't on the latest release, you'll get this message when attempting to e-file.

Solution

To e-file, simply update TurboTax. When the update finishes installing, restart your program, click File, and step through the screens again to e-file your return.

Sometimes, you'll keep getting this message despite your program being fully up-to-date. Try rebooting your computer, then reopen TurboTax and try e-filing again.

In rare cases, the message will persist even after restarting Windows. If that happens:

  1. Uninstall TurboTax.
  2. Browse to C:/Program Files (x86)/TurboTax/ and delete the Deluxe 20xx folder (substitute your version for Deluxe).
  3. Reinstall TurboTax, and then reopen the program and continue to the File section to e-file.
