Administrator Rights in Windows 7, 8, and 10

Rights (privileges) determine the tasks users can perform on a computer. Windows 7, 8, and 10 define two types of users: standard users and administrators. Some tasks, such as installing and updating software, require administrator rights.

If administrator rights are required, TurboTax will request permission. If your operating system's User Account Control (UAC) is turned off,  permission is granted automatically.

Do I have Administrator rights?

To determine whether you already have administrator rights, click Start (On Windows 8, right-click on the lower right corner of your screen), and open Control Panel.

Once you are in Control Panel, select Classic View from the drop-down in the upper right if not already selected, and open User Accounts.

You should see all User Accounts listed. If the account you are currently logged into has Administrator rights, it should be listed as such under your username, and/or you will have the option "Manage User Accounts" available.

Once you have verified that you have Administrative rights, you then want to make sure TurboTax is running at an Administrator level as well. To do so, right-click the TurboTax icon on your desktop, and select Properties. Then choose the compatibility tab, and check the box next to "Run as Administrator".

If you are having difficulties installing TurboTax and you believe it may be related to permissions, you can set the Setup.exe file to run as an Administrator level in the same way as the TurboTax application.

Signing in as Administrator

Follow these steps:

  1. On the Windows taskbar, select Start, and then select Log Off.
  2. Sign in as the computer administrator (or as a user with administrative rights).

Note: If you cannot sign in to the computer as administrator, ask a user who has administrative rights for assistance. For more information, see your Windows Help.
