If I'm self employeed can I use Turbotax Deluxe Edition or Home/Business Edition?

    How about a straight answer from Intuit?  It would be nice if Intuit would answer this question with a simple Yes or No!  I hate to pay more to get Premier if Deluxe will do the job.  Seems like nothing more than a marketing ploy to add-on cost to purchase Premier or Home & Business.

    • This post was started 10 months ago and for the 2012 returns.  The answer has changed now.  In the Online web version starting with 2013 you now need Home & Business to fill out schedule C.  Although I think a lower version will do a C/EZ form.

      The Desktop program have not changed.  All versions have all the same forms.  So you can even use Basic to fill out Schedule C for self employment.

      And how is the first answer not a straight answer?  Last year you could use any version (except the Free Edition) for anything.  You just get more help in the higher versions.

    Either but H&B will give you more help. Start in Deluxe and upgrade if you think you need to.

    For Deluxe (or Premier or Basic)

    You need to report all your income even if you don't get a 1099Misc. You use your own records.  You are considered self employed and have to fill out a schedule C for business income.  Enter it under
    Federal Taxes Tab
    Wages & Income
    Choose Explore on my own (if it comes up)
    Then scroll way down to Business Items

    Business Income and Expenses - Click the Start or Update button

    You use your own name and ssn or business name and EIN if you have one.   You should say you use the Cash Accounting Method and all  income is at risk.  After you put in your income and expenses  if your net profit is $400 or more you will pay 13.3% for 2012  Self Employment tax in addition to your regular income tax.  The Schedule SE will be automatically filled out for it.

    After it asks if you received any 1099Misc it will ask if you had any income not reported on a 1099Misc. You should be keeping your own records.  Just go through the interview and answer the questions.   Then you will enter your expenses.
