Open enrollment for health insurance in the online marketplace starts on October 1, 2013 and ends on March 31, 2014, so this is the last date you can sign up for health insurance coverage to avoid the tax year 2014 penalty under the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare).
This applies to only to legal U.S. citizens and legal residents. The requirement does not apply to American Indians, people in jail, and undocumented immigrants. Here are a few other exceptions that allow you to go without health insurance and not have to pay the penalty:
• The period that you’re uninsured is less than three months.
• Your income is low enough that the lowest cost plan is more than 8% of your income.
• Your income is low enough that you do not have to file taxes.
• Your religious beliefs prohibit medical treatment.
