Yes, you need to enter the 1099-S form on your tax return. The IRS was sent a copy and they will be looking for it on your tax return.
If this was her personal residence, she won't be able to deduct the loss on her income tax return. Personal losses are not deductible.
To enter the 1099-S. see the information below:
Sale of your main home:
If the 1099-S was for the sale of your main home, it’s reported under Less Common Income in the Wages & Income section. Here's how to enter the form:
Open or continue your return.
Type sale of home in the Search box.
Select the Jump to link in the search results.
Follow the screens to enter the info from your 1099-S.
Profits of up to $250,000 ($500,000 on a joint return) on the sale of your home may not be taxable if it was your primary residence for two of the last five years. We’ll ask you some questions about the sale of your home to see if you qualify.
Other real estate sales
If your 1099-S wasn’t for the sale of your main home, select the option below for step-by-step instructions:
Sale of a second home, an inherited home, or land
Sale of a rental property

Enter the 20% on your Schedule C, under Commissions and Fees. The 20% will be deducted from your income.
We'll automatically complete Schedule C or C-EZ when you set up your self-employment work in TurboTax or when you enter what the IRS considers self-employment income (it’s often reported on a 1099-MISC).
Schedules C and C-EZ are supported in TurboTax Self-Employed (both online and in the mobile app) and in all personal 1040 versions of the TurboTax CD/Download software.
To set up your business:
Open or continue your return.
Search for schedule c and select the Jump to link in the search results.
Answer Yes to Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? and follow the instructions.
If you've already entered self-employment work and need to enter more, select Add another line of work.
If you need Schedule C to report a 1099-MISC, search for 1099-misc and select the Jump to link. Answer Yes to Did you get a 1099-MISC? and follow these directions. We'll ask questions to find out if the income needs to go on Schedule C or C-EZ and add the right schedule to your return (if needed).
If your return only requires Schedule C-EZ, we'll generate Schedule C for calculation purposes. It won't be filed with your return.
