I hate to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately, once the return is accepted by the IRS, you will need to amend your tax return. This will be available in TurboTax around the middle of February. Amending is a simple process in TurboTax. I will provide instructions below. You will need to wait until the IRS receives and processes your original return. Wait until you receive the refund on your original tax return (or your check clears if you had to send a payment). This article shows you how to amend your 2018 tax returns prepared in TurboTax. If you used the desktop version of TurboTax, skip to step 6.

You should keep this for your records. If you do hear from the IRS, you will have to respond and let them know the sale was for your personal residence and explain why it qualifies for the exemption. If there is any uncertainty for you about whether you do qualify for the exemption, the article below will help clarify this for you.

Yes, you can file married filing separate. You should not include money given for child support on your tax return. If you have primary physical custody of the children, you can claim the children on your tax return. I am going to link some articles you might like to read for more information. The topics you are asking about can get complicated and the answer will vary depending on your situation. This article will help you decide if you can claim your children as dependents. Here is a great article for separated couples.

If your home of record is West Virginia, you will owe taxes to West Virginia, not Oregon. So, even if you get Oregon taxes back, if West Virginia taxes your military wages, you may owe West Virginia. When you go through TurboTax, the program collects this information from you so it can accurately file your state taxes. It is a complex situation so pay particular attention to the questions as you go through the program. Click here for information about military taxes. Here are the only types of active duty pay West Virginia does not tax: (17) Certain pay for active duty service pursuant to Executive Order. Active duty military pay received for the period of time an individual is on active duty as a member of the National Guard or armed forces reserve called to active duty pursuant to an Executive Order of the President of the United States for domestic security duty is an authorized modification reducing federal adjusted gross income, but only to the extent the active duty military pay is included in federal adjusted gross income for the taxable year in which it is received. W. Va. Code § 11-21-12e(a). (18) Certain active duty pay in year of separation from active military service. The amount of active duty military pay received by a resident individual who is on active duty for thirty continuous days or more in the armed forces of the United States, the National Guard or armed forces reserve is allowed a modification reducing federal adjusted gross income for the taxable year in which the individual has separated from active military service, but only to the extent the active duty military pay is included in federal adjusted gross income for the taxable year in which it is received. W. Va. Code § 11-21-12e(b).

You can establish and contribute to an IRA all the way until tax filing day (4/15/19) to receive the tax benefit for 2018. Your custodian does need to designate it as a 2018 contribution.

Take a look at the link below. Pay particular attention to the New Tax Rates section. Most states have experienced tax reform this year due to the federal tax reform. It looks like in Maryland a couple of counties have increased their taxes. Also, there have been changes to the personal exemption and standard deduction.
