Can I claim someone as a dependent for 1 year?

Yes, it's possible to claim a dependent for only 1 year if you qualify for the exemption. If your situation was different in other years, you would not claim them.

See Rules for Claiming a Dependent , but if you reply with specifics I could give you more details. TurboTax does ask all of the questions to determine if you can claim a dependent.

Ok. That's what I thought too. My friend meets all the requirements for this year but might not next year.  Someone who has education with taxes says you must be able to claim a dependent for 3 years or it might screw up our future returns. So I want to be sure on this before I do claim them.

Ok. Thank you. I've read all that I could find about claiming someone and that was the first I had heard of that so I wanted to look into it and couldn't find anything that would indicate what they said as true.
