You may file a return if you got a W-2 for 2016 and had federal income tax withheld. If you file an income tax return, you may get a refund.

You must file a return if any of the following apply:

  • You earned more than $6,300.
  • You have more than $1,050 of unearned income. Unearned income is money that you get without working, like interest and dividends.
  • Your gross income was more than the larger of (a) $1,050 or (b) your earned income (up to $5,950) plus $350.
  • You had net earnings of at least $400 from your business or self-employment.
  • You had tax taken out of your paychecks and you want it back.

If you choose to complete an income tax return, it is important that you choose the following options:

  • Someone else can claim me as a dependent on their tax return and
  •  And this person will claim me on their 2016 tax return. See the screenshot below.

To enter the W-2:

  • Type W-2 in the search bar and click search.
  • Click on Jump to W-2.
  • Enter the W-2 information.

For additional information, see IRS Publication 17 Chapter 1.
