You have to have your 2016 tax file saved on your computer to transfer it into your 2017 return.  Open up your 2017 software.  Click on the 'File' menu at the top, and then select 'New Tax Return'.

On the next page (Continue your 2017 Return), next to 'Don't see your return in the list?', click 'Start New Return'.

Choose 'Start a new individual tax return'.  On the next page, you will see the available 2016 returns to choose from.  If you do not see your 2016 listed here, click the 'Browse' button to try and locate the file on your computer.

If you see your 2016 return in the list, just click on 'Transfer Return'.  If not, use the Browse button to locate it and get it transferred into your 2017 software.  The file name you are looking for will be in this format -  yourfilename.tax2016 OR yourfilename.pdf

You will then be prompted to review your 2016 information that was just transferred to your 2017 return.
