If I bought a laptop computer to help with starting a new business but also use it for personal use can I claim it as a business expense

You can claim the proportion that was used for your business. For example, if you used it about 60% of the time for business, then you could deduct 60% of the expenses associated with it.

After you have the amount you can deduct, you can use the steps below to enter it into the correct area. It will be entered as an asset.

To Enter your Laptop into TurboTax Self-Employed Online:

1. Select "Business" at the top of the screen

2. Choose "Continue", then "I'll choose what I work on"

3. Select "Start" next to "Business Income and Expenses"

4. Select "Edit" next to your business name

5. Scroll down to "Assets" and select "Start" next to "Assets Being Depreciated"

6. Continue answering the questions accurately until you can add your asset, then complete the section
