I have a 1099-misc from another state, for short-term work I did there for under $2,500. The state isn’t listed at the bottom (#17 state/payers state). Buy that state?

Do I need to buy that state on turbo tax and file with that state? (I live in WI, and have this situation for CA and IL)

If you meet the filing requirements for each state then you will need to file a nonresident state return. Please view the filing requirements for each state below.

California nonresident filing requirements:

  • If your income from all sources is more than the amount defined in this chart you need to file a nonresident state return.

Illinois nonresident filing requirements:

You will need to view Illinois Schedule NR to determine if you are required to file an Illinois nonresident return.

According to the Illinois Department of Revenue, a nonresident must file Form IL-1040 and Schedule NR if

  • you earned enough taxable income from Illinois sources to have a tax liability ( i.e., your Illinois base income from Schedule NR, Step 5, Line 46, is greater than your Illinois exemption allowance on Schedule NR, Step 5, Line 50)

Please follow the directions in the TurboTax FAQ below if you need to file a nonresident state return. It is important to prepare the nonresident state returns first.

Thank you. For California, I’m single under 65, and made less than $17,693, so I think that means I don’t need to file there. Could that be correct? (I’m on ObamaCare, so I do have to file taxes in general)

The links for IL are more confusing. I see the form that I would have to fill out, but how do I determine if I need to fill it out? I didn’t do a state reciprocity form with my employer. It was a 3-day teaching job for $1,800 in January.

You are not required to file a nonresident return for the state of California.

You are not required to file an Illinois state return either.
