My parents claimed me, 42 yrs old and disabled, as a dependant cuz I live in their home. Now they're trying to kick me out. Can they do this since they claimed me?

I'm a paying tenant in their home and they've been writing me landlord letters for state help. We had an argument and they're kicking me out. Since they claimed me as a dependant, don't they have to provide me with shelter?

 Q. Since they claimed me as a dependent, don't they have to provide me with shelter?

A. No,  they do not have to continue to provide you shelter. They only must have provided you shelter for most of the tax year (2016) for which they claimed you.

A more relevant question may be: Can they continue to claim me as a dependent after they kick me out? The answer is: that depends on when they kick you out. They may, most likely (there are other rules to meet), claim you for 2017, if you lived with them for more than half the year.

Your question is not a tax question.  If they claimed you as a dependent it was for the previous year--2016.  You may need to seek legal advice.

That is a legal question that can only be answered by a licensed attorney.
