My daughter is a 20 years old college student. She earned $900 in 2025 so she has no tax liability. Since my husband and I do not qualify to claim her education credit due to our income, we decide not to claim her as a dependent. Instead, she will file her own tax return in order to claim the $1000 refundable American Opportunity Credit. For the question, "Can another taxpayer claim you as a dependent?", should she mark "YES" or "NO" since we are not claiming her as a dependent? Please advise.

Sorry---nope, she cannot do that. She CAN be claimed----that you are not claiming her does not change that. If she can be claimed as someone else's dependent she must say on her own tax return that someone else can claim her.
