Do we need to file a joint return when one spouse is not working?

My husband cannot work and is in the process of filing for disability benefits.  Is a joint return still necessary/the best way to file?

Yes, and filing jointly is the best way in this case (and in most cases).  You get to use his standard deduction and exemption which would otherwise go to waste.
