Hello,
My son who is full time student at MSU (In MI) and worked in cafeteria. His W-2 showing MI state and local tax (MIELE) deduction. He is consider as full time resident of IL. So how to handle this situation. I only know MI and IL are reciprocal state, so how to pay tax in IL for that W-2 and how get refund from MI, if he still have to pay state tax in IL?

@JayKP because MI and IL are reciprocal states ( for income tax purposes), you can choose to file in one state only. If you choose to file in IL, then you follow the following steps ( from MI DOR :(
" No ,you are not required to file a Michigan return if salaries, wages and other employee compensation was your only Michigan income. To claim a refund of any Michigan withholding tax if you are a resident of a reciprocal state, you must file an MI-1040, Schedule 1, Schedule NR, and Schedule W. (Reciprocal states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin) "
