On the deluxe edition is it federal 40 plus state price or is federal free and state is 40 to file?

It depends on whether you are looking at online software or the desktop software which you download and install to your own computer.  On the TurboTax site, it is 69.99 to purchase the CD/download for Deluxe--which includes one state's software and e-filing for up to 5 federal returns.  If you get "online" Deluxe it costs $39.99 + 36.99 for the state software and e-filing is included--but you can only do ONE return.  (Those prices will go up later in the filing season)

Personally I think desktop is a much better value--but it depends on whether you have any other family members who need to file returns.

If you want to go for desktop software you can usually find better prices on Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Sam's, Walmart, etc.

With the CD/Download software there is an additional charge of $19.99 to e-file each state return (no additional charge to file a state return by mail). That price will also increase sometime in March. "Actual prices are determined at the time of print or e-file and are subject to change without notice."
