The only way to open a .tax20yy file is with the TurboTax program for the particular year.

If you just need a copy of the 2019 tax return you could try TaxPrinter. You send them your .tax2019 file and they send you back a PDF of the tax return. TaxPrinter has no connection with TurboTax. I have never used TaxPrinter, so I cannot make a recommendation. I'm just making you aware of it.

If you are just trying to transfer your 2019 information into a new 2020 tax return you don't need the 2019 program. The 2020 program will transfer information from the .tax2019 file.

for years prior to 2018, the apps are no longer supported so you would need to use a service like taxprinter. if you were to obtain the CD for any of those years you would be using a version that probably doesn't reflect the final version of the app. if you were to install and open up one of those .taxxxxx files, you would likely end up with a version of your return different than what was filed. also, no state programs are available for those earlier years.
