I have TT 2022, 2023, and 2024 Federal and state installed on my desktop computer. I upgraded to Windows 11 Home Version 10.0.26100 (the current version and none of the TT versions work. I get Error 190 when trying to open an existing TT file. I followed these instructions for TT 2024 and got the same result.
"Follow these steps to fix the error:
I still get taken to a spot telling me to pay for a state license I already own.
Is there a registry key or ??? that needs to be changed?
I really don't want to spend an hour on telephone hold.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Hope my notes help....
If you upgraded to a higher version or bought extra states they should be in your Turbo Tax account downloads, or you will need to ask support for them again,
https://shop.turbotax.intuit.com/commerce/account/secure/login.jsp?pagecontext=download
If you can't find your download, use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of user ID's for an email address. Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used
https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery
Go to Access my downloads and sign in with the same user ID you used to purchase your software.
On Your TurboTax account, select Downloads.
Select the version you want to download and save it somewhere on your computer where you can find it.
Install your software by double-clicking the downloaded file.
if what @VolvoGirl suggest doesn't work, you'll need to contact support. However, I'm guessing that what they'll tell you to do is to completely uninstall reboot and reinstall each year one by one. sometimes reinstalling over the old version doesn't result in a corrupt file be overwritten. Yes, there is a registry key for the state for each year by is like 30+ characters that vary. uninstalling should delete the registry key if that's what causing the problem. just deleting it?
HKLM\software\intuit\TY##\perstates\
Thanks to VolvoGirl and Mike 9241 for the suggestions. Some more information:
1) I did not install an additional state, only the state that came with the original software
2) If I go to my Intuit account, it confirms that I have 2024 Federal AND STATE
3) If I download the file from the link on that page, the file that I get appears to be the same as what I get by going to the TT website directly. I used it anyway with the same result.
4) I have always removed TT using the Windows "Add or Remove Programs" in "Settings". Presumably this should have taken care of Registry Keys etc.
HOWEVER
When I reinstall TT 2024 I am not asked for my license code so that is evidently left somewhere on my machine.
IN THE END
With all the remove programs, restarting windows etc. the result is still Error 190 and a prompt to pay $45.
Has anyone had any real success with support after staying on hold?
@rocky471 I put together a bunch of my notes so this might be long. But several things to check. Or you will have to call customer service.
Just a thought. It may depend on if you are signed in to your account. Go up to File-at bottom Sign in. If you are signed in it will say Signed in as [your name] under File. If you are signed out, it will say Sign in under File. And where is your file stored? It should not be in the Cloud or on OneDrive. You should move your return to the Documents folder on your computer.
You may need to update your program and also check for Windows Updates. Go up to Online-Check for Updates. You may need to update a couple of times. And you should reboot your computer and you might need to install some Windows System updates. Those can get stuck. And turn off your anti-virus to reinstall or update.

If you can’t update your Windows program try doing a Manually update

When I upgraded my Windows 10 to 11, I only had to reinstall 2024 from my online account. All my prior programs to 2019 were still there and not affected. 2024 never asked for my License Code or to download my state. After it installed, it didn't automatically start so I clicked on the Desktop Icon to start. It asked me if I wanted to update. I did and it only updated California (to release 5/8/25). I think the new download had the current federal updates. All my returns were listed and opened.
Can you open your returns in the prior versions? Can you start a new return in 2024? How far did you go in the new return? You need to enter some basic information in the new fake return, then go to the state tab and try to get the state program. Then try to open your existing return, go to FILE - OPEN
I don't know exactly what this user did (I think he opened 2023 program) but he found…. After downloading from Amazon a second copy of turbotax 2024 to use on my desktop windows pc. I could not get it to open a .tax2024 file so I opened the .tax2023 file and went directly to "file" option and it did update the state file. I then was able to open the .tax2024 file.
A SOLUTION (sort of)
I think this actually qualifies as a bug but one could argue whether it belongs to Intuit or Microsoft...
My C: drive is a pretty small SSD so I install everything I can on D:. That is where all my TT programs lived happily in Windows 10. The TT installation script allows you to install anywhere, so I kept installing on D: when trying to solve the error 190 in Windows 11. Finally, in a flash of inspiration (desperation??), I allowed the installations to go to the default location. When I do this, 2024 and 2023 both work. I did not try earlier years.
For me, this means that I will only install a version of TT when I need that year for something since I don't have the room to keep them all installed on C:.
Thanks to the Level 15 folks for all the help. Hopefully this experience will be helpful if someone else hits this situation.
