If you used an IP PIN for 2024 you are required to use one for 2025 as well, so you if do not enter one, your e-file will be rejected.

IDENTITY PIN

If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file.  Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN and enter the six-digit PIN.

It will be accepted if the IRS has not issued you a pin.    Most people do NOT have a pin issued to them.

If you have been assigned an identity protection PIN (IP PIN) and lost it or didn't receive a CP01A notice, you'll need to retrieve your IP PIN online or have it reissued to avoid processing delays.

From the IRS  -  If you file your return without your IP PIN

  • We will reject your electronic return.
  • We will review your paper return to verify your identity which will delay your refund.

You are assigned an IP PIN if

  • You are a victim of identity theft.
  • You opted-in to receive an IP PIN.
