It is possible. Non-taxable Social Security is taken into consideration on the calculation on Form 8962.

That will not reduce your AGI. It will potentially reduce your taxable income. You get a percentage of your contribution, depending on your tax bracket. $5,000x 10% bracket = $500 less taxable income.
