Why would the wages and income page show a different 1099-DIV total than the dialog that pops up when you click the total?

I am entering dividend information by downloading from my brokerage accounts. The total shown on the "Wages & Income" page is more than the amount shown when I click on that total. The dialog that pops up matches the sum of my 1099-DIV values downloaded. The amount shown on the "Wages and Income" page is much higher.

Does the 1099-DIV report three figures for dividends, qualified dividends and capital gain distributions?

The calculation at the Wages & Income page seems to report more than one value or report a different value than dividend income alone.

No. I have 2 1099-DIV statements which are both downloaded. The dialog reports the sum on a single line. That value is correct and is used to fill out the tax forms and calculate all taxes.

The summary page shows a number $4k higher that doesn’t seem to match anything. It doesn’t seem to be used for any other purpose though.

It depends. The difference may be attributed to non-taxable distributions or other dividends that aren't part of your taxable income but are still displayed for reporting purposes.  Without looking at the brokerage statement, it's hard to speculate specifically to account for the $4k difference.

While summary pages are helpful for tracking your investments, they aren't official tax documents. For tax purposes, the following is the only relevant information you will report on your tax return that is included in your brokerage statements.

  • 1099-DIV: Reports dividends and distributions.
  • 1099-INT: Reports interest income.
  • 1099-B: Reports proceeds from the sale of securities.
