Why would I need Deluxe to complete the following return: married filing joint, only income is 2 w-2s for jr enlisted soldiers, no dependents, no school, standard deduct

It really is just 2 w-2s with income under $60k. Why wouldn't that qualify for the free edition?

Are either of you contributing to a tax deferred retirement plan at work or outside of work?  If so, you are probably eligible for the Saver's Credit which is not supported by the Free online edition.

However, if you are active military and indicated that in the My Info section and you have entered a military W-2, there is no charge for you to use the Deluxe or Premium online editions (excluding the Live editions).

We are not able to see your tax return and determine what is determining the use of the TurboTax Deluxe product.

This TurboTax website compares the TurboTax Online products including which tax forms are required for which TurboTax version.

Have you indicated that you are active duty military under My Info down the left side of the screen?

Yes - we’ve indicated we are active duty and put in our 2 w-2s (these are the only tax forms we need to input). We got a message we cannot continue using the free version after leaving the income section

No additional retirement savings contributions other than TSP

Then on your W-2 in box 12 there will be a code of D with an amount.

This will make you eligible for the Saver's Credit reported on an IRS Form 8880 which is not supported by the Free online edition.

Thanks for the info! Disappointing that TurboTax charges any servicemembers who contribute to their TSP though (which is pretty much everybody now that the retirement system has changed)

You will not be charged by TurboTax for using either the Deluxe or Premium online editions.  As previously stated, if you indicated you were Active Military in the My Info section of the program and have entered a Military W-2 there is no charge.

See this TurboTax website for Military users of TurboTax - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/military-edition.jsp

As indicated, I did that. Still getting the message that we’re not eligible for the free version.

It is Ok that you will not be using the Free edition, you will not be charged for the Deluxe edition.
