Why would I have paid less tax during the year than my income level?

I stayed within the same corporation, but had a change in position that came with a new salary. This change happened halfway through the year, but I don’t understand how this would cause me to owe taxes?

When your income changed did you change your tax withholding?  Maybe you need to give the employer a new W-4 and have more withheld.

I didn’t even know that was a thing. I don’t ever change anything, but I do remember refilling it out when my job changed and nothing was different. I assumed they would take out the appropriate taxes.
