Why was I charged to use turbo tax but a friend of mine paid zero?

There are two different TurboTax free products.   I don't know which free product your friend used, or whether you both have the same forms in your return.

This would have been easier to resolve before you had paid, since there is a second free product that I mentioned below that could have handled that.  I'll tell you how to speak to TurboTax Support, at the end of this post but I'm not sure what they will say.

Because of new changes in the tax laws for 2018, there may be some filers who can no longer use regular Free Edition this year.

The regular Free Edition is more limited this year due to tax law changes.    If you need any of the new Schedules 1-6, for instance, then you can't use Free Edition.    You can read about the new schedules at the link below.  If you click the "more info" link there, it will show you what each schedule looks like.

Here are some common things that cannot be handled by the regular Free Edition:

     Itemized deductions
     Business or 1099-MISC income
     Sales of stocks/mutual funds/bonds
     Rental property income
     Foreign Earned Income
     HSA
Credits, deductions and income reported on the new schedules 1–6, such as the Student Loan Interest Deduction

There is a second free program that could have been used called the TurboTax Free File Program (not the same as regular Free Edition).
It can handle all the new schedules if one qualifies to use it.   But if you have already filed, then it is too late to use it.

So the only thing you can do at this point in time is to discuss it with TurboTax Support, if you wish, and see what they have to say.
