Why was a tax levy removed from my paycheck at work?

The Collection Division of the IRS will use every lawful means to collect amounts due to the federal government for payment of tax arrearages, penalties, and interest. These include garnishment of salaries and wages, levies against bank and brokerage accounts, levies against tax refunds and other federal payments through the US Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Services.
