Why is TurboTax forcing me to use Do It Yourself Deluxe for an unnecessary 8959?

My filing status does not constitute a form 8959, why is Turbo Tax forcing me to pay for a service I do not need or want?

You would use Form 8959, Additional Medicare Tax to compute:

  • the amount of additional Medicare tax you owe and
  • the amount of additional Medicare tax withheld by your employer, if any.

If you don't require this form, then you may need to delete Form 8959 as the software is probably looking for it based on your initial entries into the program.

Here's the general procedure for viewing a list of all the forms in your return and deleting unwanted forms, schedules, and worksheets in TurboTax Online:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. On Tax Home, select StartContinue, or Pick up where you left off to enter your return.
  3. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  4. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  5. Select Delete next to the form, schedule, and worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.

Advice below from @DoninGA

You are seeing this because the amount of Medicare taxes withheld in box 6 is Not exactly 1.45% of the Medicare wages in box 5.  Remove any cents for the Medicare wages and see if the upgrade message goes away.

OR -

Delete the w-2 and re-enter.  Make sure the amount in box 6 is 1.45% or less of the amount in box 5.
