Why is the system telling me I can't e-file for 2019 until January 2021? It says it's not open for the season yet.

Yeah...part of that is a typo, and actually refers to 2020 tax returns filed in 2021.

E-filing 2019 is closed.....and Online tax software users for 2019, who did not e-file before 15 Oct, must now print and mail file their 2019 taxes themselves.   The Online software will shut down entirely for finishing 2019 taxes by the end of this month (Oct).....at a somewhat uncertain date...hopefully they'll wait until 30 or 31 Oct....but no promises...switch to file-by-mail and get them printed out soon.

BUT, that's only for already started 2019 tax returns.  People who hadn't even started their 2019 taxes before 15 Oct cannot start them "Online" now.....and must use the separately purchased and installed  Desktop software to do 2019 taxes now

Those who use 2019 desktop software can download/install and use it to finish preparing their 2019 taxes at any time without the end of October deadline for printing...but e-filing is closed for them too. Only file by mail is available for 2019 or earlier tax years.
