why is tax form 8959 being added to my return when it should not be, making it where I can't file for free?

My income is well below the threshold. I have two w-2's, but that shouldn't create an 8959 form.

It depends. Since you are below the filing threshold, there may have been an excess of Medicare taxes deducted since you have two W2's. The 8959 is generated to help you to get back the excess.

To verify if this is the case, look at your W2's and add the medicare wages reported in Box 5 Standard Medicare tax (Box 6) should be exactly 1.45% of your Medicare Wages (Box 5). If your medicare tax withheld is more than 1.45% of the total, the 8959 is generated to help you recover the excess amount on your tax return.

If you are still looking to file with the free version, you can delete the 8959. Do this by going to:

  • Tax tools
  • Tools
  • Delete a form
  • Delete 8959
  • log out of your return so the changes can take place

If your TurboTax program does not revert back to the free version, you may need to clear your return and start over.
