Why is my "Other withholdings" a negative number?

My federal Income Tax withholding amounts to $38,000. After finishing my turbotax filings it says in my summary that I should have paid $37,000. So, in theory I believe my refund should equal $1,000. But instead, in the summary page it shows a negative -$2,000 for "Other Withholdings" and therefore my paid taxes goes down to $36,000 and it says I owe $1,000 instead. What is this line "other withholdings" and why is a negative number which means it reduces the taxes that I actually already paid to the federal government.

I suggest you take a look at what you posted to your Other Withholdings.

Select Tax Tools

  • This is on the left sidebar
  • You may have to minimize the Federal and State options
  • You also may have to scroll down on that menu
  1. Once you can work on Tax Tools
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. There will be 3 or 4 green boxes
  4. Select Topics Search
  5. Type the form number or a topic.
