I am filing taxes on TuboTax for the state of NJ, but the company that I worked for in NJ let's say paid me around $20K (not using real numbers, these are just examples). I have other interests and such that's like < $500. However, the gross income that is showing up is like $22k, which no matter how I slice or dice it doesn't make sense. How exactly is New Jersey's gross income calculated, and where can I see the breakdown of this gross income?

The New Jersey income would likely come from the amount you entered from line 16 on your W-2 form entry. Also, you can look on your Form 1040 to see what income is listed in lines 1 through 8, as adjusted by the amount on line 10. Your federal income will transfer to your state return, with a few possible adjustments.
When you finish your return and pay your TurboTax fee, you can see your New Jersey return Form NJ-1040 line 15 through 26 to see what makes up your New Jersey Income.
To view your form 1040 and schedule 1 to 3:
You need to be working in your state tax return to see the state tax summary.
