Can I take the standard deduction of $12000? Or can I not take any deductions?

Your AGI is calculated before taking either the Standard Deduction or Itemized Deduction. Frequently, it will be the same amount as total income. You would take the deduction that is most advantageous to you, either standard or itemized. After you choose, you will arrive a taxable income, which your tax is based on.
