Why is my $300 home energy credit not changing my federal due/refund amount? I qualify for $300 but nothing changed when it was added.

The Form 5695 Residential Energy Credits for tax year 2023 has not yet been finalized in TurboTax.

The Form 5695 is scheduled to be available in TurboTax on 02/07/2024 (subject to change).

If your total tax is $0 then the Energy Credit added to the return would not affect the return results.  Energy tax credits aren't refundable tax credits. This means that you can reduce your total tax to zero if you have a large enough credit. But, you can't get any excess credit amount as a payment to you on your tax return if you have more energy credit than your total tax.

If the credit exceeds your tax liability for the year, you can “roll over” the unused portion to future years so long as the credit remains in effect.  In future years, TurboTax will question whether there are any unused Energy Credits or you will be able to use the Search feature.
