Are you trying to enter your son's earnings on your tax return? If so, that is the source of the problem.

Income earned by a dependent and reported on Form W-2 cannot be included on your Form 1040 individual federal income tax return.

If you are using TurboTax Online, you will need a separate account and user ID to create and file your dependent's tax return. In our TurboTax Desktop Products, you can create and file up to five federal income tax returns.

Your dependent must file their own federal tax return if any of the following are true:

  • Unearned income was over $1,050.
  • Earned income was over $12,000.
  • Gross income was more than the larger of—
    • $1,050, or
    • Earned income (up to $11,650) plus $350.

If none of the above apply, your dependent may file a tax return to claim a refund of any federal tax withheld.
