If your Georgia income is zero, then just delete the Georgia return so that it won't e-file when you e-file the federal.

Filing Requirements for Georgia

Full-year residents? You are required to file a Georgia income tax return if any of the following apply:

  • You are required to file a Federal income tax return
  • You have income subject to Georgia income tax but not subject to federal income tax
  • Your income exceeds Georgia's standard deduction and personal exemptions

With your information above, your Georgia income is probably zero. If so, you can just delete the state return so that it won't e-file when you e-file the federal.

If you are using the online product, do the following to see a summary of your Georgia return:
  1. Go to My Account (top menu bar, just right of center)
  2. click on Tools
  3. Click on View Tax Summary
  4. Click on Georgia return - this is just a summary but it our to tell you if your Georgia taxable income is zero.

If your Georgia income is not zero, please read the following:

In TurboTax, all taxable IRA distributions, pensions, annuities, and Social Security are deleted from the state income tax return automatically if the taxpayer is a Georgia resident.

As you go through the Georgia interview in TurboTax, you should encounter a screen entitled "Here's the income that Georgia handles differently".

At the top of this screen, you will likely see "Retirement Income Exclusion Learn More".

The number to the right should be the sum of your IRA distributions, pensions, annuities, and Social Security that were taxable on the federal return and which was removed from Georgia taxable income. If it is not, go back to the federal return and make sure that each type of income was correctly entered.
