Default is "SINGLE" when "OTHER" is picked because the software does not list "SISTER-IN-LAW". This is wrong. I have a "SISTER-IN-LAW" I support for years due to an accident and I cannot claim her as a dependent. She does not work nor have insurance. I had to file a 1040X for 2019. I am waiting until they finish processing my 2020 so I can amend my 2020 for HOH.
I should be able to be "Head of Household" with a qualifying IRS dependent. Selecting, "OTHER" and answering all the questions still defaults to "SINGLE" which is not correct. It disallows me picking "HOH" and now I have had to amend for 2 years. 2019 & 2020 as mentioned pending the processing of my taxes which are still in limbo and I used TT & were accepted 2/11.

You may be able to claim her as dependent, but she must live with you in order for you to file as HOH. But I am flagging your post so that the Moderator can answer your question about the drop down menu.
She does live with me. Has for over 4 years.
I have to amend my return to correct ... AGAIN. The problem is that I filed early and the IRS has not completed my refund and I cannot do the 1040X unless the refund is complete. The return was accepted on 2/11/2021 but no other action has been done since then & I cannot get ahold of anyone @IRS to tell me what is going on. I need this completed with IRS so that I can fix my 2020 due to the issue with TT software that defaults to SINGLE and does not allow me to enter HOH when I am.
