My W2 form says I am owed 185 in state tax. But when I get to final stage of filing tax return by mail it says I am owed 0 dollers
Bos 17 on your W-2 shows how much your employer withheld for state taxes (and which they then sent to the state). It is not "how much you owe", because that is not determined until you do your return. Your employer does not have enough information to know how much you owe the state.
Box 17 is how much tax withholding they took out for you. It is just an estimate of the Tax on your income. It's to cover the tax due on your return. Sounds like they took out the right amount and you don't owe any more or get a refund. You don't always get the withholding back.
Hi guys. It is money that is owed to me not money that I owe. My IL1040 form on tax report says that I am owed 185$ but it says it says 'do not mail, for e file only' therefore don't know how I can get this money back.
Oh that. All the state forms are not ready yet. And you can't efile state until the federal has been Accepted. And the IRS is not accepting returns until Jan 29 this year. So you have to wait to file state.
Thank you would that explain the 0$ refund in state tax displayed here, even if my tax return states otherwise.
