Why do i owe state taxes this year when i never have before

There could be many reasons.  Which state do you live in?

Did you look at your entries to make sure there is not a typo?  This is the most common reason.  Go back and double check your entries on your W-2.  Make sure your decimal points are in the correct spot. 

Did your income stay the same and the taxes withheld stay the same?  Or did your employer for some reason withhold less?

Did your state tax laws change?

Well obviously something changed. Compare your 2022 and 2023 state tax returns line by line and see where the significant differences are.
