Why do i need to pay for a copy of my taxes for 2016 that i already have done?

If you paid for TurboTax this year, you can download all of your returns, including prior years, until October 2018. (If you filed with Free Edition this year, you can get your current year return without paying until October.)

You can also order a transcript from the IRS. Go to their Get Transcript site, choose Get Transcript Online, and follow the directions (if you don't already have an account, you'll need to set one up).

i still don't understand why i need to pay for a copy of last years taxes it said it was free and now you want me to pay

TurboTax Online is only available for a certain period of time each year. Saving your tax file is optional, but we recommend that you take a few seconds to do this as your tax data file may come in handy after TurboTax Online shuts down.

You can save your return as a tax data file and also as a PDF. The tax data file is used to transfer information to tax software programs such as TurboTax. The PDF is a version that can be easily viewed or printed.
