Why do i need to claim my son as a dependent?

i only met my son once thereafter i was incarcerated for the next 17 years. so i was not able to provide for my son.

You do not need to claim your son as a dependent if he did not qualify as your dependent.

even if he qualifies as your dependent you do not have to claim him.
