Why do i get a tax break from my son when not claiming him as a dependent

Hi! I am wondering about tax breaks for my child Donovan. My boyfriend and I are together, he will claim head of household. He has our son under his insurance policy. I added Donovan under my info, but did not claim him as his father will be. (He is under the impression that he must, in order to cover him under his work provided insurance, is that correct?) Though I did not claim Donovan as my dependent my refund still increased by close to $3000. I thought only the parent claiming the child got a tax break on them. Do I totally delete Donovan from my personal information?

If all of you live together, then only ONE of you should put anything about your child on a tax return. I know the questions are confusing, but that sums it up. Let BF claim him and you delete him from your return.
