Why do i get a refund for 2018 when I had to pay for 2017

I had to pay $600 for my 2017 taxes but for 2018 I'm getting over $1,000 back.  I want to make sure I did my filing correctly.

We can't see your individual return as this is a forum website.  But, there were many changes made to the tax laws between 2017 and 2018, including large changes made to the child tax credit and itemized deductions.  So, its quite possible that your refund will be different this year than in years past.
