why did my expected return significantly drop after filling out the insurance section when I have medicare, and it was similar to last years return.

What did you fill out?   If you had marketplace insurance from healthcare.gov you were supposed to enter a 1095A.    You were not supposed to "fill out" anything if you have Medicare.   When it asked if you have a 1095A you should say NO and just continue with the rest of your tax return.

Did you enter some sort of stuff for a 1095A that you do not even have?

If you need to delete the 1095A from your return

To delete it, please follow these steps:

1. In TurboTax, open your return
2. In the left-hand column, locate Tax Tools, click on the drop-down arrow then click on Tools
3. On the Tools Center  page, click on Delete a form 
4. A list of forms will appear. Locate the Form 1095-A and click Delete next to it.
5. On the next screen, click Delete Form
