Why can't I file an extension online?

How are you trying to file an extension. You can do it a few ways in TurboTax.

1. Type extension in Search in the upper right
2. Select Jump to extension
3. Select Start Easy Extension

Or you can click on File a free extension on Free federal tax extension is available

If you will owe the IRS, go to the IRS "Make a Payment " page an d indicate your payment is for an EXTENSION.

you will get a confirmation number for your records.

if you know you will get a refund, you don't need an extension.
