Why can't I claim my newborn son if he was born before December 31st?

He was born on 10/18/2016, so he didn't live with me for more than half the year but I didn't think that mattered since it's not like a custodial circumstance, he was born in 2016.

Why can't I claim my newborn son if he was born before December 31st?

In the year that a child is born, the IRS deems that the child lived with you for the entire year, and you must answer the question that way. In addition, you must enter a valid SSN for the child. Do both of those things and you can get full credit for the child.
