Hello! I have used TurboTax for a number of years, without any fees and without any problems. I am a Senior on Medicare, Medicaid, energy assistance, food assistance and dental assistance, and I certainly do not have $69 to pay to file to the State of Wisconsin to get my Homestead Credit so I can pay for my property taxes! Do we have any other choices in this regard? I was going to file today, have a doctor appointment tomorrow, but will try again to file on Wednesday. If TurboTax can't help, I'll check with TaxAct, as I used them a long time ago; if they can't help, I guess I'll just have to download blank forms and do my best (and my "best" isn't very good)! Thank you for any information you might be able to provide!! From Susan in Wisconsin
(P.S. I don't know what "Free Edition Plus" is ... might it pertain to me? I just don't have the $ to pay anything!)

If you are using the TurboTax online Free edition there is no charge for a state tax return. If you are required to upgrade to the Deluxe edition or higher due to the type of tax data you are entering then there is a charge for the state tax program.
The TurboTax Free online edition is for very simple tax returns that do not require any other form or schedule other than the Form 1040. If your tax data requires entry on any other form or schedule then you must upgrade to the Deluxe edition or higher.
If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2023 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.
Go to this TurboTax website for the Free online edition - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/free-edition.jsp

TurboTax Online: Important Details about Filing Form 1040 Returns with Limited Credits
A Form 1040 return with limited credits is one that's filed using IRS Form 1040 only (with the exception of the specific covered situations described below). Roughly 37% of taxpayers are eligible.
If you have a Form 1040 return and are claiming limited credits only, you can file for free yourself with TurboTax Free Edition or TurboTax Live Assisted Basic (if available), or you can file with TurboTax Full Service at the listed price.

Go to this IRS website for other tax preparation software vendors who offered Free Filing - https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/browse-all-offers/
Tax laws changed and seniors usually have different forms after they retire that takes them out of the TurboTax free file. The IRS provides other options at https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free.
TurboTax has worked with the IRS to develop better free filing programs and those will be rolled out next year.
@blf4ever I don't think they would charge you for state if they didn't charge you for federal first. What are they charging you for? What version does it say you have? Free Edition Plus is a paid version if you want to call official customer service.
